Retaining Your Clients

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Hi Folks,

I wanted to share some vital information with you about how to retain clients and get them to refer to you for life! We are all passionate trainers and I know you do a great job when you are with your clients but what happens when you are not there? Are they always talking about you and your service to their friends and family? Are they thrilled with your service, sessions and results?

Now don’t panic, 99% of trainers around the world cannot answer all of these questions or even some of them. We are so focused on getting the maximum results for our clients that sometimes we forget to stop and ask what they like and don’t like and how could we improve our service. The quickest and easiest way to do this is to survey them……..often!

Now back in the day I used to create surveys and post them/hand them to my clients and ask for their honest feedback. I would be lucky to get 1 out of 20 back and that was usually from the client who I knew loved everything about the training and it didn’t help me to provide a better service.

Here is the KEY: You need to finish your session 5 minutes early and give them time to fill out the form then and there. Always give them the ability to refer friends and family to you on the same form (VIP’s you have these done for you) so it turns into a client referral exercise as well.

Here’s the clincher! If they ask for something new/different and it fits into your training philosophy GET IT and IMPLEMENT IT! You will show them enormous respect if you take action on their recommendations and you can make special mention of it in your next monthly newsletter (recognise and reward always). Most clients think that these surveys are useless because nothing ever happens when they are honest so you can prove to them you have their best interests at heart and that you are prepared to change.

Get out there and find out what else your clients want, they will thank you with their wallets and with their referrals, go for it!

Cheers

Ric

The Importance of Putting Clients’ Needs First

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Hi Folks,

I wanted to share with you some insight I gained on the weekend, on what our PT clients REALLY want.

I was speaking at a weekend seminar with Dr Ross Walker, Dr John Tickell, Graham Park and others and half way through my presentation a woman from the audience asked me why she kept getting sick and injured whenever she worked with a Personal Trainer? 10 other people in the seminar were nodding their heads as she asked this question.

I stopped, thought about an interview I did with Chad Timmermans a couple of months ago, and gave her this answer. “There are 2 reasons why you have been getting sick and injured when you train with a PT’er and by working in my PT studio you will never suffer the same fate, just guaranteed results” (ABM; Always Be Marketing).

  1. Trainers don’t know enough about specific exercise, intensity of exercise for each individual. Not giving or referring clients to get the nutritional info they need to allow max recovery etc. (This doesn’t apply to 85% of the trainers out there and certainly not you)
  2. Passion and/or Ego; Trainers want the client to get 100% results out of every second they spend with the client so we push and push so that we feel we have given the client what they NEED. Some of us work in an environment with other trainers and the ego tells us to work the client harder than the last trainer so that they will like/respect us more!

I asked whether that made sense to her and she said “all of the above!” Folks the problem with both of these reasons is that we are not putting the client and what THEY WANT first. When was the last time you asked your client which exercises they liked the best? What about asking them what they want to do for this session? We all need to take our professional ego out of the equation and give our clients what they want…..FUN! With results thrown in.

Learning to communicate with your clients on a regular basis is vital to giving them what they WANT and, because you are a professional, you can give them what they NEED within the same program.

That woman was thrilled with my response as were the other 10 people who were nodding their heads. She spoke to me afterwards and, with her husband, they have both booked in to join our PT program in my PT studio.

Give them what they want and they will give you what you want: Client results, referrals, renewals and raving fans of you and your business.

Keep Chargin’

Ric

P.S To learn more about the Psychology of training people make sure you book in for our Mega Training Event at the Rydges Hotel in Melbourne on the 29th and 30th of August. If you attend one seminar this year make sure this is it! Only 38 seats to go so book now, I would hate for you to miss out.
